Congratulations to the Piedmont Region III Science Fair Winners!

The Piedmont Region III science fair took place Feb. 22-25, 2012 at USC – Upstate.  It included almost 50 schools from 6 upstate counties (Spartanburg, Cherokee, Chester, Lancaster, Union and York).  There were 6 categories of competition in each of 3 grade levels.  SCA sent a total of 18 projects to this fair competing in the Middle school level – grades 5-8.  We had several students recognized for their efforts and received the following awards at a ceremony held February 25 at USC-Upstate.

8th grade student Logan Morris won several awards.

1)    She placed first in the Chemistry division.

She was nominated to be a Broadcom MASTER.  With this highly esteemed nomination, she is eligible to submit her project into a national competition among a select group of nominees from across the nation.

Here is the website with details on this prestigious nomination.

(below is an excerpt from the Broadcom Masters website about the honor)

Middle school students are nominated to compete in the Broadcom MASTERS by SSP-affiliated science fairs held during the school year. Nominees enter the competition by completing an application explaining their science project and demonstrating their use of STEM principles - science, technology, engineering and math - in the development and presentation of their project. From among entrants nationally, 300 semifinalists are selected, including 30 finalists.

If she is chosen as one of the 30 finalists, she will receive an all expenses paid trip to Washington DC to participate in a national science fair sponsored by Broadcom.

3)    Lastly, she was the overall winner for all categories and projects submitted in the Middle school grades (5-8). With this honor she received an $800 scholarship to USC-Upstate.

Other award recipients from SCA included:

5th grade student Kyle Volk placed first in the Math/Computer Science category.

5th grade student Brooke Murray placed second in the Math/Computer Science category.
